The Field at Standard Park Keeps Growing: Veterans Day Week for Lambert Lake Neighbors

October 29, 2026

Last November, local veteran Frank Smart spoke at the opening ceremony of the Field of Honor at Standard Park. The other speakers were Shane Warner of Columbia College Fire, Jamie Franklin of Horses of Warriors, Tuolumne County Sheriff David Vasquez and members of the Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club, according to myMotherLode's report from November 10, 2025. Scouts helped with the ceremony. By the end of that weekend, the outlet reported, the field had grown to 300 flags.

In its second year, there were 35.

That jump is what makes the event worth understanding. Each flag on the field is paid for and dedicated by someone, usually in honor of a veteran, someone on active duty, a new recruit or a first responder they know. So the size of the field is basically a count of the people who chose to take part. The 5th Annual Tuolumne County Field of Honor opens Saturday, November 7, at Standard Park and Sports Complex, 18500 Standard Road.

From 35 flags to 300

The Union Democrat's Veterans Day roundup for the event's second year described the "second annual Tuolumne County Field of Honor display of 35 American flags at Standard Park Sports Complex" in East Sonora. That year the opening ceremony started at 11:30 a.m., and the field stayed open through November 15.

By the fourth year, the count was more than eight times higher. Event chair Lisa Dasko explained the idea to myMotherLode:

"The Field of Honor is a collection of flags that we dedicate to local Veterans, active duty military, or first responders. The Sonora Sunrise Rotary has been doing this for four years."

The same report explained where the money comes from: sponsorships from local businesses plus individual flag sponsorships.

Second year Fourth year, 2025 Fifth year, 2026
Flags on the field 35 300 "Hundreds," per organizers
Opening ceremony 11:30 a.m. Opening weekend Noon, Saturday, Nov. 7
Field open through Nov. 15 Nov. 12 Nov. 11
Beneficiaries Not reported Horses of Warriors, Columbia College Fire Academy Horses of Warriors, Guardian Moms 22, Sonora Sunrise Rotary Foundation special projects

The recipients change from year to year. Horses of Warriors has been named both years. Columbia College Fire Academy was a 2025 recipient. For 2026, the Colonial Flag Foundation's event page adds Guardian Moms 22 and special projects of the Sonora Sunrise Rotary Foundation.

The organizers haven't published a 2026 flag count yet. The number on the field this year depends on how many dedications come in over the next week.

How a flag ends up on the field

If you want to add a flag of your own, here's how it works. Dedications go through the Colonial Flag Foundation's Sonora page, and each flag costs $35.

  1. Buy the flag at checkout. One order can cover several flags. List them in the dedication box as "Flag 1 – Dedication | Flag 2 – Dedication."
  2. Fill in the "Dedicated to/or in Memory of" box with the honoree's name, military branch or organization, dates of service and rank.
  3. See it on the field any day from November 7 to 11.
  4. Pick it up on Thursday, November 12, at the field between 8 a.m. and noon. If you can't make it then, you can pick it up later at Wilco, 750 Mono Way.

If you dedicated a flag last year, the event listing on Visit Tuolumne says you can repost it for 2026 through Sonora Sunrise Rotary. The club's page lists Lisa Dasko as this year's chair. For questions about a dedication, volunteering or sponsoring, the event phone number is 209-400-1644.

Picking up your flag at Wilco is also handy if you live in Lambert Lake. Mono Way is a road you probably use for regular errands already, so if Thursday morning doesn't work you can grab it on your next trip.

Five days at Standard Park, November 7 to 11

This year's field closes one day earlier than last year's did. In 2025 the field ran through November 12. In 2026 the public days end on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, and November 12 is set aside for flag pickup.

Saturday, November 7, noon. The opening ceremony features patriotic music, a formal color guard, guest speakers, a children's scavenger hunt and free hot dogs. Local first responders and veteran organizations will also make appearances, and admission is free.

Sunday, November 8, through Tuesday, November 10, noon to 4:30 p.m. The field is open daily during these hours. Organizers say the flags are lit in the evening, so you can see them after dark as well as during the afternoon hours.

Wednesday, November 11, noon to 4:30 p.m. This is the last public day. Neither the Colonial Flag Foundation page nor the Visit Tuolumne listing mentions a closing ceremony, so plan on regular hours.

Thursday, November 12, 8 a.m. to noon. Flag pickup at the field.

Standard Park is mostly known as a ballfield complex. An older myMotherLode destination listing describes adult softball leagues and tournaments, youth soccer, Little League and youth softball there. That same listing named the annual Santa Fly-In among the complex's events. So a lot of families probably already know the parking lot and the layout, even if they've never been for the flags.

What Veterans Day itself has looked like

As of this week, the Field of Honor is the only Veterans Day event on Visit Tuolumne's November 2026 calendar, and that's why it carries the week. The ceremonies that usually happen on November 11 haven't been announced yet. They have run in past years, though, and the Union Democrat's 2025 Veterans Day roundup gives a good idea of what to expect if they come back:

  • Columbia Cemetery: the Columbia Grenadine Belles and Columbia Militia held a ceremony starting at 10:55 a.m.
  • Tuolumne Veterans Memorial Hall, 18375 Fir Ave., Tuolumne: VFW Post 4748 held an 11 a.m. ceremony.
  • Divide Cemetery, 11300 Memorial Drive, Groveland: a ceremony at 11 a.m.
  • Sonora Elks Lodge, 100 Elk Drive: an evening dinner with doors at 5 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and free meals for veterans.

The Columbia ceremony has a longer track record. myMotherLode's event calendar lists the same Grenadine Belles and Columbia Militia remembrance on November 11, 2024, starting at 10:55 a.m. Treat all four as past-year traditions until the organizers post 2026 details, and check before you drive out.

The calendar adds two more things to know for Wednesday. Tuolumne County's 2026 holiday schedule shows most county offices closed for Veterans Day. If you need the Veterans Services Office, the county's resource guide lists it at 195 Hospital Road N in Sonora, phone 209-533-6280, so call ahead before you go that week. Visit Tuolumne's November calendar also lists November 11 as a National Parks fee-free day.

The weekend after the field comes down, the Sonora Chamber of Commerce's 2nd Saturday Art Night fills Washington Street on November 14 from 5 to 8 p.m., with downtown merchants hosting artists and entertainment.

At Tuolumne Homes, we're always glad to point neighbors toward local events like the Field of Honor.
